Alton Carter, 84, of Hobart, Oklahoma, took his journey home on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at OU Medical Hospital in Oklahoma City with his wife Cheryl by his side.
Alton was born October 16, 1940, in Kaufman, Texas, to J.D. Carter and Sarah Williams Carter. He was raised in Texas before the family moved to Oklahoma, where he was baptized at a very young age.
Alton married Cheryl “Miles” Carter on August 9, 1990, in Hobart, Oklahoma. To this union, he gained a daughter, Rachel Lynn Edwards, and two grandsons, Gary Smiles and Zayden Bullcoming.
Alton liked to go fishing, visit the casino, and enjoyed the company of his friends. He was blessed to learn the skill of making full beaded moccasins and enjoyed cooking meals with his family and friends. He worked as a truck driver and wrecker driver and was fortunate to own his own wrecker service. He also worked for many farmers across southwest Oklahoma, many of whom became his good friends.
Alton enjoyed many things in his lifetime, but most of all, he cherished the company of his family. He took many young men under his wing, and they all called him “Dad” or “Pops.” They grew to love and respect him because he took the time to listen to them. Alton was a good man—the kind of man who would give his last dime if he knew it would help someone, and he never asked for anything in return. He was a good friend, a hard worker, and never had a harsh word for anyone—only kind words.
Alton is going to be missed so much by his wife, family, friends, and the many lives he touched. Gone but never forgotten.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Carter of the home; his son, Darrell Carter of Oklahoma City; and his daughter, Rachel Lynn Edwards of Elk City. He is also survived by five nephews: Ricky Lacy and Joe Carter, both of Wichita, KS; Lynn Carter of Oklahoma City; Corey Carter; and Russell Carter. Three nieces: Ann Tillman and Mary Roundtree, both of Hobart; and Doris Jones of Wichita, KS. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Georgia Carter of Hobart, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a large extended family. Alton truly had a big and loving family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.D. and Sarah Carter; five brothers: Robert “Dollar Bill” Williams, Eugene Williams, Arthur Carter, Overton Carter, and Joe Carter; and one sister, Julia May Carter.
