Burial with military honors will follow at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
Gerald Claude Green was born August 23, 1939, in Dallas, Texas, to Claude and Iva (Malone) Green. He passed away Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Brookdale Danforth in Edmond, Oklahoma.
He was raised in Buffalo and Dallas Texas and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas in 1957, where he participated in baseball. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin where he was a two-time intramural wrestling champion and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism. While in college he began his journalism career at the Austin American-Statesman as a sports deskman while attending college on a journalism scholarship.
As a Captain in the United States Air Force, he served as a Base and Wing Information Officer at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, a News Officer with the Armed Forces Korea Network, and later as a Minuteman missile crew commander at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.
Following his military service, he became editor of the Ord Quiz in Nebraska in 1968 and later worked as copy editor for The Dallas Morning News, where he wrote the headline, “Dallas—Still the Biggest D” after the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl XII victory over the Denver Broncos.
In 1978, he moved with his family to Clinton, Oklahoma, where he founded the Custer County Leader, earning the Oklahoma Press Association Sweepstakes Award for the state’s largest weekly newspaper in its class. In 1982, he began a career with the Clinton Daily News for over 38 years. During that time, it was estimated that he had written over 30,000 published stories and reported on more than 900 City Council meetings. In recognition of his dedication to the community and his faithful coverage of local government, the City of Clinton honored him with a plaque and nameplate placed on a courtroom bench bearing his name. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 2012.
Gerald was a member of the Church of Christ, the American Legion, and a former member of the Clinton Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed traveling, going to his grandkid’s activities, staying active and was often seen jogging around town. He was also an avid fan of the Texas Longhorns.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Douglas Green; his daughter, Susan Kay Van Ostrand; his brother, Billy Green; and his sisters, Shirley Davis and Joyce Beltz.
Survivors include his son, Damon Green and wife Belen of Edmond; the mother of his children, Kay Green-Stout of Edmond; daughter-in-law, Amy Green of Schulter; son-in-law, Phil Van Ostrand of Oklahoma City and a longtime special friend, Kay Morrison of Clinton.
He is also survived by five grandchildren—Angel Marin, Caitlin Green, Michael Green, Nicole Green, and Brandon Green.
