Joey Ray Dawson, Jr., age 24, affectionately known to his family as “Lil Joey,” was born September 9, 2002, in Hobart, Oklahoma, to Joey Dawson and Gena Jones. He passed away Sunday, October 4, 2026, in Inverness, Florida.
Joey spent his early childhood in Hobart, where he attended school through the fifth grade. He later moved to Texas with his father, where he continued his education until the tenth grade. The family eventually relocated to Edmond, Oklahoma, where Joey attended Deer Creek High School. A bright and determined young man, Joey completed his education a year ahead of schedule, graduating in 2020 as a member of the Class of 2021.
Following graduation, Joey moved to Florida, where he began his career with the United States Postal Service.
Joey had an adventurous spirit and a love for life. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether it was camping, kayaking, or exploring new places. He especially loved the ocean and the freedom and beauty that came with being near the water. Joey also enjoyed playing video games and practicing parkour, an activity that reflected his energy, determination, and willingness to challenge himself.
Although Joey enjoyed many activities, his family held a special place in his heart. Known lovingly as “Lil Joey,” he shared a special bond with those closest to him, and the memories they made together will forever be treasured. His life, though far too short, was filled with experiences, adventures, and moments that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Joey was a member of People's Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elsie and Roy Jones; his great-grandparents, Woodrow and Marie Winsett and Charles and Betty Dawson; his cousins, Kooper Preston and Melanie Ellis; his uncle, Jake Kuntz; and numerous other uncles and family members.
Joey is survived by his father, Joey Dawson and his wife, Brittany, of Edmond, Oklahoma; his mother, Gena Jones of Florida; his siblings, Jessica Hunter and Jamie Courtney, both of Florida, and Addison, Uriah, and Rhett Dawson, all of Edmond; his grandparents, Jacky and Lenell Dawson of Alvarado, Texas, and Robin and Becky Kuntz of Hobart, Oklahoma; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and many friends.
Joey will be remembered for his adventurous nature, his love of the outdoors, and most importantly, the love he had for his family. Though his time on this earth was much too brief, the memories he created, the laughter he shared, and the love he leaves behind will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
A Private burial and service was held early October 10, 2026 under the direction of the Lee Hometown Funeral Home.
