Patrick Thomas Cornell, age 77, of Clinton, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. A respected attorney, devoted public servant, and lifelong supporter of the Clinton community, Pat's life was defined by integrity, service, faith, and his unwavering love for his family.
Pat was born on October 9, 1948, in Clinton, Oklahoma, to K.B. Jr., and Wanda Jean (McBride) Cornell. He was raised on the family farm outside of Custer City, where he learned the values of hard work, honesty, and commitment that would guide him throughout his life. He graduated from Custer City High School with the Class of 1966 before attending the University of Oklahoma, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1970. He continued his education at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, graduating in 1973, and was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar in August of that same year. He proudly practiced law in Clinton for more than five decades, remaining dedicated to his clients and community. In fact, he continued going to his office every day until just a couple of weeks before his passing because he truly loved the work he had devoted his life to.
While attending the University of Oklahoma, Pat married his sweetheart since Junior High, Kathryn Kay Barrick, on June 1, 1968. Together they built a loving home and were blessed with two children, Steven and Amy. Following Kathy's passing, Pat found love again and married Sue Smith Severson, who became his faithful companion and partner in life. Together they shared many happy years.
Pat's impact on Clinton extended far beyond his law practice. Throughout his life he generously gave his time, knowledge, and leadership to the community he loved. He served as Clinton Municipal Judge for more than 20 years, was Mayor of Clinton for several years then later was elected to two separate terms on the Clinton City Council. He was an active member of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce and worked tirelessly to promote the growth and success of his hometown, he was also a 50 year member for of the Clinton Rotary Club.
His legal career was equally distinguished. His dedication to his profession earned him the respect of colleagues throughout the state.
Education and the future of Clinton's young people were also close to his heart. He served as a member of the Clinton Public Schools Foundation, believing strongly in investing in future generations. In recognition of his countless contributions to the community, Pat was honored as Clinton's Businessman of the Year in 2010.
Faith was a cornerstone of Pat's life. He was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Clinton, where he faithfully served his church family through the years.
Away from work and public service, Pat found his greatest joy in spending time with those he loved most. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose family always came first. Whether he was enjoying a round of golf, cheering on the Oklahoma Sooners, casting a fishing line, traveling with family, or following his grandchildren to their many activities and sporting events, Pat treasured every opportunity to make memories with the people he loved.
One of Pat's greatest passions was Clinton Red Tornado football. For an incredible 50 years, he served as a spotter for Clinton football games alongside his longtime friends, Denny Meacham and Paul Brown. Their friendship and dedication became a cherished tradition that touched generations of Clinton football fans.
